Broadcloth on WFMU’s Airborne Event with Dan Bodah

Broadcloth on WFMU’s Airborne Event with Dan Bodah

Hey everyone,

we were incredibly pleased and grateful to get in the bit of playing we managed to during the month of August, and here is some evidence of that, courtesy of the Free Music Archive. At the link are five tracks from our interview/performance segment on Dan Bodah’s Airborne Event show – one composition from each of us and two improvisations. The segment was a blast and Dan was a great host, and we’re so pleased to have a record of it hosted on line. Have a listen, or download, on us.

Shaking off the Sleep – Summer Shows in 2013!

As you are probably aware, Broadcloth has been on a bit of a hiatus while Nathan has been overseas booking up on his early music. We are all very pleased, however, that circumstances have allowed us to get a few shows in this summer while he’s back on this continent. This time it’s not so much a tour as it is a scattering of shows throughout August, but as we’ve just finalized the last of them, we are pleased to pass the listing along. Hope to see you at one of these, and stay tuned to this spot for the most current updates:

August 14th – at Douglass Street Music Collective, Brooklyn, NY. Time TBA

August 21st – at Firehouse 12, New Haven, CT. 8:30 PM

August 22nd – w/ Forbes Graham at Outpost 186, Cambridge, MA, time TBA

TOUR INFO!

This is much delayed, but here we are. If you find yourself in one of these fine locales in the next week and a half, please come out for a show! We’re all very excited for this. Carl’s solo material is sounding great, and we’ve all been itching to get out and try a few new things as well as revisit some other points in our body of work. And take note of the homecoming show in New Haven, on Friday, June 29th.

New Release, Upcoming Tour

The last time we posted was to inform you of our show at the Stone on February 18th. That show was so successful, we all thought, that we decided to release a recording of the whole set, available HERE, for free or pay-what-you-can download.

On the horizon, we’re working out a tour for late June. Expect a separate post when everything comes together for that tour, but in the mean time take a look at what we’ve got so far on the Performances page.

Sooner than that, on May 6th, we’re performing at the Russell House on Wesleyan University’s campus with Carl Testa performing music for solo bass and electronics. The show begins at 8pm. Carl will be joining us on tour so consider this a sneak peek of sorts for the tour.

More as it comes!

Broadcloth @ The Stone: Press Release

Hello,

The new music/free improv trio Broadcloth is back at The Stone in February. Called “high voltage” by All About Jazz – New York, Broadcloth has been busy as of late as a group and with individual projects. Vocalist Anne Rhodes appeared in Anthony Braxton’s operas Trillium E and Trillium J;  Rhodes and accordionist Adam Matlock appeared this past October in the composer’s Ghost Trance Choir; and cellist Nathan Bontrager appeared in Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra at Roulette. The group is also working towards the final recording session for a debut full-length album. Between them, the members of Broadcloth cover western early music, various folk musics, modern composition, songs from popular, operatic and dramatic repertoires and various traditions of improvisation.

On Februrary 18th, nearly two full years after their first appearance there, Broadcloth returns to The Stone for a set at 10PM. For this date they’ll be performing a few of their newer compositions, including the newly completed “Book One” by Rhodes, a score featuring embroidery and graphic notation, and “Mere Distractions,” a chamber opera written for the group by Matlock. The trio will also perform Bontrager’s microtonal exploration “Con Ahinco” and some free improvisations.

Cellist Bontrager is also appearing in the 8PM set that night with the improvisational string quartet String Surprise (featuring Al Margolis, Julianne Carney and James Ilgenfritz). Admission is $10 per set.

The short version:
Broadcloth Trio
2/18/12 10PM
$10
The Stone, NYC

Hope to see you there,

Best,
Adam

Upcoming Shows!

Broadcloth is playing two upcoming gigs this January.

The first is in New Haven at 756 Chapel (guess the address!) this Friday, January 13th, starting at 8PM.

Broadcloth wil play alongside Jeffrey Young, Paul Pinto, and Gelsey Bell from ThingNY. Each will perform solo sets as described below, and the night will conclude with group improv:

Jeffrey Young (of thingNY) presents a new set of alternatively energetic and meditative work for violin, voice, and live electronics. Young is a composer and violinist from Brooklyn, NY who specializes in experimental classical and rock music.

Blending lo-fi noise with minimalism, Paul Pinto (of thingNY) gives the New Haven premiere of For Stefanos Tsigrimanis, a haunting and meditative elegy scored for two Califone turntables, guitar, voice and electronics.

Gelsey Bell (of thingNY) presents Tom Swafford’s one-woman distilled opera “This is the Real Me,” which Bell helped develop. Bell is a Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and scholar.

The second is on January 21st, being called the Chaos Academy Improv Night, at Home Audio, 132 St James Place, Brooklyn, NY, starting around 9 pm. The night will feature short sets from Ellwood Epps, trumpet, Montreal
(http://www.ellwoodepps.blogspot.com/), Flandrew Fleisenberg, percussion, Boston (http://lifeoffleisenberg.blogspot.com/), Sean Ali, bass, Queens
(http://seanali.tumblr.com/), Jeffrey Young, violin, Brooklyn (http://jeffrey-young.com/), Mara Mayer, bass clarinet, Brooklyn,
(http://maramayermusic.com/), in addition to a set from us. There will be various forms of improvised interaction between all of the performers as well. Entry with donation.

Down the line, we return to The Stone on February 18th, performing the 10PM set. Performing at 8:00 is String Surprise, a quartet put together by Al Margolis and featuring Broadcloth cellist Nathan Bontrager. Stay tuned for details on that gig.

Broadcloth Awakens!

Broadcloth has technically been on hiatus for the past few months; although we all performed in several concerts together (notably with Carl Testa and guitarist Ben Shirley performing Shirley’s compositions, and with vocalist Kyoko Kitamura on a different bill), and did one recording session in order to continue tracking the ever-impending full length album, we hadn’t performed as Broadcloth since the end of June.

All this is about to change. As Nathan will be leaving for Europe in November, and we’re all extraordinarily busy with varying events including the Energies, Ideas, Intuitions Festival at Roulette between October 5-8, performing the music of Anthony Braxton (more info at: http://www.roulette.org/events/upcoming.php), we’ve only got a few dates on the horizon, but hopefully more soon.

First is this weekend, October 1st, at The Home Of in Gowanus. (http://www.thehomeof.org). This will be our second visit to curator/saxophonist Edward Schneider’s Holidays for the Future series which focuses on new and experimental music as well as improvisation. This is part of a two day mini-fest (day 2 is at 16 Beaver St in Manhattan, which will also feature Anne and Nathan along with other improvisers.) Our first time there was a blast and produced one of our best sets (audio available at http://thehomeof.org/holidays-for-the-future-4), and we are excited to return!

The next will be on November 2nd, as the debut installment of another arm of the Uncertainty Series, happening at the Elm Bar in New Haven, CT. Details surrounding start time are still nebulous but we’ll have them as we get them.

More as we hear it!

Big Room Audio released!

Little to no fanfare. Can’t believe we didn’t put this up earlier.

Cafe Orwell and Summer Vacation

Missed our TOTALLY FREE New Haven show at the John Slade Ely House last Friday? Well thankfully Kinan Faham, our sometime videographer, was there and captured the whole thing – our set, two short Prehistoric Horse sets and a final 14+ minute collaboration between the two trios.

Here we are:

And Prehistoric Horse, with some truly extraordinary and noisy textures (I challenge any harsh noise/electronic group to get this far out):

and finally our collab:
.

We’re playing with Prehistoric Horse again on June 24th at Cafe Orwell in Brooklyn, and then we’re on a bit of a hiatus for much of the summer, our varying schedules preventing much from happening but a bit of recording. We’ll all be in the same place at the same time on the August edition of the Uncertainty series but it won’t quite be Broadcloth, (more details on that as the date approaches, as it is at least somewhat pertinent to our work as a trio) and we expect to reconvene the momentum toward the end of the summer and in early fall. Stay tuned.
